Delayed speech: what if my child is not talking?
Understanding limited speech, communication assessment and everyday ways to support language development.

Consider the whole picture
Limited words, difficulty combining phrases and difficulty understanding language are different concerns. Gestures, play, interaction and hearing all matter. Comparing with one other child does not replace assessment.
No instant speech switch
“Starting speech” is a common search phrase, not a diagnosis or a guaranteed procedure. Support aims to build communication and language skills suited to the child’s needs.
Everyday support
Follow the child’s interests, name actions, share books and leave time to respond. Use languages you speak comfortably. Avoid turning interaction into constant demands to repeat words.
Seeking assessment
Discuss concerns about understanding, speech or hearing with a paediatrician and speech therapist. Seek medical advice promptly if previously acquired words or other skills are lost. Bring developmental and hearing information.

This information is educational and does not replace an individual assessment or care plan. Outcomes vary according to individual needs.
